Drama Therapy is a type of expressive arts therapy that pulls from theatrical techniques to achieve therapeutic goals.
I don’t blame you if you heard Drama Therapy and got nervous.
While Drama Therapy utilizes some skills from theatre, its primary goal is to help you heal and process your emotions, just as talk therapy would, but in a more experiential, embodied way that helps you become more attuned and grounded in the situations that brought you to therapy.
“Wait, so I’m performing… in therapy?”
Only if you want to! ~ Read below to see how I sprinkle drama therapy theories into my talk therapy sessions with clients:
Role Play (to strengthen communication, self-expression, build confidence)
Identity Work (to examine the different parts within the self, similar to Internal Family Systems work)
Storytelling (to empower you to play the role of author as you take back control of your story as you explore your journey through metaphor and difference of perspective, similar to Narrative Therapy)
Improvisation (to strengthen your ability to be flexible and roll with the punches when life doesn’t go your way)
